May 25, 2011 10:57 AM UTC
To the shock of Wall Street, CNBC announced this morning that iconic anchor Mark Haines died unexpectedly Tuesday evening at his home. He was 65.

News of his death spread like wildfire across the NYSE trading floor and trading desks around the world. Haines was respected for his tough interviewing, integrity, sense of humor and call-a-spade-a-spade style.

"With his searing wit, profound insight and piercing interview style, he was a constant and trusted presence in business news for more than 20 years," Hoffman said in a statement to CNBC employees. "From the dotcom bubble to the tragic events of 9/11 to the depths of the financial crisis, Mark was always the unflappable pro."

"Mark loved CNBC and we loved him back. He will be deeply missed," Hoffman also said.

Many on Wall Street will remember Mark Haines for his steadfast reporting in the face of the surrounding terror on 9/11.

Haines also made a terrific market bottom call at 9:47AM ET on March 10, 2009 when the Dow was at 6,732. The bottom call is now referred to as the "Haines Bottom."
