3 Contrarian Trades to Consider, and Positioning for Higher Interest Rates
June 13, 2013 1:50 PM EDTAmid global market uncertainty, investment strategists at Bank of America Merrill Lynch weighed in on interesting contrarian trades for the second half of 2013.
First looking at the the biggest consensus positions across financial markets, the firm views them as: Short assets tied to China real estate; Long assets tied to US real estate; Long high yielding assets / carry trades. "The May FMS survey visibly showed a consensus that is massively skewed to upward surprises from anything to do with US real estate and downward surprises from anything to do with Chinese real estate," strategists led by Michael Hartnett said in a report Thursday.
Given the above, the 3 biggest contrarian trades for the second half of 2013 are:
Long commodities and short real estate, which would require a stumble in the US housing recovery and/or a surprise China ease
