Nu (NYSE: NU), a digital bank based in Latin America, has announced the launch of banking products in the United States and introduced a new multi-currency account called Nu Global, according to a company statement.
The Nu Account offers a 3.50% annual percentage yield (APY) on deposits, with interest calculated and paid daily. Deposits are held at Lead Bank, an FDIC-insured partner institution. The account includes a metal debit card, savings goals, and fee-free domestic and international transfers, initially covering Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia. Customers who pair the account with the Nu Credit Card and meet qualifying transaction requirements will be able to earn 4.50% APY on balances up to $10,000.
The Nu Credit Card, issued through partner Mastercard, carries no annual fee and offers unlimited 1.5% cashback on purchases, with a potential boost to 2% under qualifying conditions. Nu applied for a national bank charter with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and received conditional approval in January 2026. The company is currently operating through a partner bank model.
Nu Global is a separate multi-currency digital account available across more than 35 countries. Deposits are converted into stablecoins — digital dollars (USDC) earning 3.50% APY or digital euros (EURC) earning 2.20% APY. The account includes a virtual Mastercard card, fee-free international transfers, and the ability to hold and trade digital assets including Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Nu reported more than 140 million customers across its Latin American markets as of its most recent quarter, with quarterly net income surpassing $1 billion and a return on equity above 32%. The company serves over 60% of the adult population in Brazil and holds the position of largest digital bank in Mexico.
Co-Founder and CEO of Nu US Cristina Junqueira said the company aims "to earn the place of being people's primary banking relationship," adding that "capturing even a small share of the U.S. market will be transformative for our business."
