SolarEdge Technologies (NASDAQ: SEDG) announced that the medium-voltage to 800 VDC conversion stage of its DC powertrain for AI data centers is now operating under load in its engineering laboratories, with system-level validation of the full path underway.
Alongside this milestone, SolarEdge and Nvidia jointly published a white paper titled "800 VDC Protection and Grounding for AI Data Centers." The document is described as a technology-neutral framework intended for evaluation by operators, vendors and standards bodies. It separates common protection and grounding requirements from design choices specific to any single implementation and describes a zone-based protection approach.
The framework evaluates grounding options and criteria for selecting grounding impedance. High-resistance midpoint grounding, solid-state transformers and solid-state circuit breakers are presented as candidate approaches rather than universal requirements. Nvidia supports an open, multi-vendor 800 VDC ecosystem and encourages multiple conversion topologies and protection technologies.
"The transition to 800 VDC will ultimately depend on whether these systems can be protected, serviced and trusted at scale," said Shuki Nir, Chief Executive Officer of SolarEdge. "That will require collaboration across the ecosystem."
SolarEdge stated that protection functions including series arc detection, DC disconnection and insulation monitoring have been used in its photovoltaic products for over a decade, but noted that this record represents component precedent and not data center validation.
The company is developing a data center platform comprising a medium-voltage solid-state transformer, DC distribution with per-branch residual current measurement and solid-state interruption, insulation monitoring and system-level monitoring. SolarEdge stated these products are under development and validation and are not yet generally available.
