Rubrik (NYSE: RBRK) announced a new data protection capability for Apache Iceberg tables running on Amazon Web Services, with general availability expected later this month.
The product, called Rubrik Apache Iceberg Protection, backs up both the data and metadata of Iceberg tables and re-registers them in the catalog upon recovery, allowing tables to be immediately queryable in engines such as Amazon Athena, Apache Spark, or Trino. The company says native snapshots function as metadata pointers rather than backups, meaning a deleted or corrupted table can leave data teams manually reconstructing metadata before data becomes accessible again.
The solution covers Iceberg tables stored in AWS Glue Data Catalog and Amazon S3 Tables. Customers can store immutable backups within their own AWS account or in Rubrik's air-gapped Cloud Vault. The product also supports on-demand backups before high-risk operations such as schema changes, with the option to restore to an isolated Iceberg branch for validation before promoting to production.
"While Rubrik has long-protected the underlying object storage, we now protect the lakehouse itself," said Anneka Gupta, Chief Product Officer at Rubrik. "That means recovering complete, queryable tables, not just raw files, with immutable backups stored directly in your own AWS account."
The product uses incremental backups of the latest compacted snapshots and allows customers to select their Amazon S3 storage class to manage backup costs at petabyte scale.
