GUSS plans to add Ouster lidar sensors to autonomous orchard machines

Ouster, Inc. (Nasdaq: OUST) announced that GUSS Automation, a wholly owned subsidiary of John Deere, plans to incorporate Ouster's Rev8 OS0 digital lidar sensors into its next generation of autonomous orchard machines.

The planned integration would add Ouster's lidar technology to GUSS's driverless sprayer fleet, which operates in orchards and vineyards. The sensors are designed to map tree trunks, crop rows, and ground contours, and to support obstacle detection across varying lighting and outdoor conditions.

According to the press release, the technology would allow a single operator to monitor up to eight autonomous machines simultaneously from a laptop. The machines affected include GUSS's Orchard GUSS and Mini GUSS sprayer models.

High-value crop environments present navigation challenges because traditional GPS systems often lack the centimeter-level precision needed to operate in dense orchards and vineyards, according to the announcement.

"Integrating advanced sensing technologies into our machines helps support reliable operation in complex orchard environments."

Ouster CEO Angus Pacala said the integration "represents an important milestone for the future of American agriculture," adding that the announcement is "about scaling reliable solutions that make agricultural operations more resilient and sustainable."

GUSS Automation is based in Kingsburg, California, and its machines are sold through the John Deere dealer network. Ouster is headquartered in San Francisco and serves customers across the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
