Amentum joint venture picked for Australia submarine shipyard

Australian Naval Infrastructure (ANI) has selected a joint venture between Amentum (NYSE: AMTM) and Laing O'Rourke as its Capability Partner to support the construction of a nuclear-powered submarine yard in South Australia, according to a press release from Amentum.

Under a long-term contract, the joint venture will work at the Osborne shipyard, north of Adelaide, where Australia plans to build nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS trilateral agreement with the United States and United Kingdom.

The Capability Partner role will include nuclear-related program management, construction management, and safety leadership within ANI's Integrated Delivery Office. Responsibilities will also cover governance, assurance, logistics, commissioning, digital engineering, supply chain quality, and contractor engagement.

The new facility will house equipment for assembly, outfitting, testing, and commissioning of the future SSN-AUKUS submarine fleet, marking the first time Australia will build and sustain conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines domestically.

"Amentum has the opportunity to be part of a once-in-a-generation national endeavor that will shape Australia's sovereign nuclear capability for decades," said Mark Whitney, president of Amentum Energy & Environment.

Amentum currently employs more than 1,000 people in Australia across defense, cyber, energy, and infrastructure sectors.
