Anixa Biosciences receives South Korean patent for breast cancer vaccine

Anixa Biosciences (NASDAQ: ANIX) announced that South Korea's Ministry of Intellectual Property has issued Patent Number 10-2960889 covering the company's breast cancer vaccine technology, providing protection in that market through 2040.

The composition-of-matter patent is exclusively licensed from Cleveland Clinic and covers Anixa's approach to breast cancer prevention based on immunizing against human α-lactalbumin, a protein associated with lactation that is expressed in certain breast cancer types. No preventive breast cancer vaccine is currently approved anywhere in the world.

The Korean patent adds to Anixa's existing portfolio in the United States and other international markets. According to the company's press release, a recently completed Phase 1 clinical trial conducted at Cleveland Clinic met all major primary endpoints, with the vaccine deemed safe and well tolerated. The trial generated immune responses in 74% of participants.

"Each global patent we secure deepens the global foundation we are building for our breast cancer vaccine," said Dr. Amit Kumar, Chairman and CEO of Anixa Biosciences. "Our growing international patent estate further strengthens our ability to pursue global opportunities and potentially partner with larger pharmaceutical companies for worldwide commercialization."

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women globally. In South Korea, the incidence rate has been rising, and the disease tends to occur at younger ages than in Western countries.

Anixa's vaccine technology, developed at Cleveland Clinic, targets a protein the company describes as "retired" — one normally active during lactation but aberrantly expressed in some cancers, including triple-negative breast cancer. Cleveland Clinic is entitled to royalties and other commercialization revenues from Anixa related to the vaccine.
