China's NeoKylin OS is Most-Popular Homegrown Platform to Replace Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows XP

While Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) might be looking to make things right in China following accusations that the company was leaking data to the U.S. government, the Chinese government has made its own, homegrown operating system.

Quartz noted Tuesday that China's OS is named NeoKylin and it was developed by China Standard Software. It's reported that the new OS is running on over 40 pecent of commercial units sold by Dell in the country. The NeoKylin OS is available on Dell Latitude commercial laptops, Dell OptiPlex commercial desktops, and DellPrecision workstations, one Dell spokesperson in China noted.

Overall, the OS looks exactly the same as Windows XP, which is largely still a very popular operating system worldwide.

NeoKylin is said to be light with just a few apps installed. Adding programs proved to be quite a challenge, as well.

Shares of Microsoft are modestly lower Wednesday.
