Xanadu and AMD release open-source quantum-classical interface tool

Xanadu Quantum Technologies Limited (NASDAQ/TSX: XNDU) and AMD announced the release of Backline, an open-platform solution co-designed to enable low-latency communication between quantum and classical computing hardware.

Backline is built on Xanadu's open-source PennyLane software platform and is available as an open-source feature suite within PennyLane. The solution is designed to connect standard CPUs, FPGAs, and GPUs to quantum processors without requiring vendor-specific hardware.

According to the companies, Backline achieves end-to-end classical-quantum loop times under three microseconds. The solution supports use cases including quantum error correction, real-time network signal processing, and high-speed sensing.

Xanadu Quantum Technologies Limited (NASDAQ: XNDU) released an updated technology roadmap on Aug. 31, 2026, outlining projected milestones for its photonic quantum computing platform through the end of the decade.

The Toronto-based company is targeting a reduction in its key photon loss indicator from 24.1x to 1.0x by 2030, which it says is necessary to cross the error-correction threshold required for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Logical error rates are targeted to improve to 10⁻16 by 2030, compared to roughly 10⁻3–10⁻8 projected for 2028.

Xanadu Quantum Technologies (NASDAQ: XNDU) has signed a definitive agreement with the Government of Canada for CAD $195 million in funding through the Strategic Response Fund, administered by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.

The commitment represents the federal portion of up to CAD $390 million in total support announced in March 2026 for Project OPTIMISM. The government describes the investment as the largest in quantum manufacturing in Canadian history.
