UBS presents 6 ways to invest in Europe

UBS is out with a note identifying single stock opportunities in a “Neutral” Europe, based on potential macro and structural catalysts. A number of potential tailwinds have driven strong European equities performance this year, outperforming other developed markets. And while the firm is Neutral on the region overall, it believes there are single stock opportunities.

Macro and structural factors issuing from a pro-growth German government, possible Russia/Ukraine ceasefire or peace deal, improving manufacturing activity outlook, and increasing European defence spending spurred on by trade tariff discussions with the US, will create investment opportunities, the firm believes.

Citi breaks down the Cyclicals vs. Defensives debate in European equities

After last month's correction, European equities are back near all-time highs, but have got there with Defensives outperforming Cyclicals. The disconnect between Cyclicals and the broader market is rare, and in a research note to clients, Citi weighs whether it can continue.

While Cyclicals could see more downgrades going forward, these would also amount to a Contrarian indicator, said Citi analysts, as they screen for attractive cyclicals.

The reason why Cyclicals have lagged is deteriorating earnings momentum. “After Q2 upgrades, European EPS forecasts have rolled over, led by Cyclical sectors. Tech, Lux Goods, Autos, and Commodities have all seen 2024E EPS estimates
