Investing.com -- Gold Fields Ltd (NYSE:GFI) is considering adding a cash component to its takeover proposal for Australia’s Northern Star Resources Ltd (ASX:NST), according to people familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg, as the South African producer attempts to salvage a transaction that would create the world’s second-largest gold miner. The deliberations follow Northern Star’s rejection on Monday of an initial all-stock approach valued at A$38.7 billion ($27.1 billion), though talks remain early and Gold Fields may ultimately decide against submitting a revised offer.

Gold Fields Ltd. is considering sweetening its takeover bid for Northern Star Resources Ltd. after the Australian miner rejected its initial approach, according to Bloomberg News, citing people familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private.

The South African mining company is looking at increasing the cash component of its proposal, the people said. Northern Star rejected Gold Fields' initial offer earlier this week.

Founders Metals Inc. (TSXV: FDR) (OTCQX: FDMIF) has completed the acquisition of the remaining 30% of Lawa Gold N.V. from Nana Resources N.V., giving the company a 100% royalty-free interest in the 102,360-hectare Antino Gold Project in southeastern Suriname.

Concurrently, the company closed a C$76,958,864 strategic investment by Gold Fields Netherlands Services B.V., an affiliate of Gold Fields Limited (JSE: GFI) (NYSE: GFI). Under the transaction, Founders issued 14,146,850 common shares at C$5.44 per share to Gold Fields, increasing Gold Fields' ownership from approximately 12.5% to approximately 19.9% of the company's issued and outstanding common shares.
