WASHINGTON, ‌July 20 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Monday he signed a proclamation to adjust tariffs on imports of ‌aluminum into the United States, adding the domestic ⁠production of primary aluminum in the U.S. was currently insufficient.

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation using his authority under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to establish an incentive program aimed at encouraging investment in domestic aluminum smelting facilities.

The proclamation directs the Secretary of Commerce to create a program that will accept onshoring plans from companies looking to build, expand, or refurbish aluminum smelters in the United States. Companies whose plans are approved would be eligible to import a corresponding volume of primary aluminum at a tariff rate equal to half the standard Section 232 rate.
