Trump slams Anthropic CEO over AI slowdown call
Investing.com -- President Donald Trump criticized Anthropic PBC Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei on Monday for calling on the industry to slow down artificial intelligence development, escalating his resistance to new regulations for the technology.
In a social media post on Monday, Trump attributed voter concerns about AI data centers and frontier models to what he called a "SICK conspiracy" and said "the only one that is happy about it is China."
"The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!" Trump wrote. "We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so. Conspiracy Theorists, Treasonists, Traitors, and Leakers, BEWARE!"
The president's comments extended beyond remarks he made over the weekend, when he acknowledged the need for some regulation. Trump has repeatedly rejected warnings about AI safety risks and stressed the importance of developing the technology to maintain an advantage over China.
Amodei recently said the industry should slow down development of the most advanced models to allow companies to better understand potential risks. OpenAI's Sam Altman and SpaceXAI's Elon Musk supported Amodei's position.
The disagreement puts an industry that Trump has relied on for economic growth at odds with the Republican president. Trump has made accelerating nationwide AI adoption central to his policy agenda. His administration has adopted a largely hands-off approach to AI regulation, formalized in an order he signed in early June.
Trump and his administration have clashed with Anthropic and Amodei in recent months. The Defense Department designated the company as a supply-chain risk after it requested restrictions on military use of its tools.
