Cespira reveals technical details of HPDI 3.0 fuel system
Cespira, the joint venture between Westport Fuel Systems Inc. (TSX: WPRT / Nasdaq: WPRT) and Volvo Group, has released technical details of HPDI 3.0, the next generation of its High Pressure Direct Injection fuel system, with production scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first equipped vehicles expected on the road in early 2027.
According to the announcement, HPDI 3.0 features a new fuel rail-pressure control architecture intended to improve fuel economy and engine performance while simplifying OEM calibration. The system supports liquefied natural gas (LNG) and renewable bio-based liquefied natural gas (bioLNG), and is designed to be adaptable for future fuels including hydrogen.
The updated system incorporates proven HPDI injector dynamic sealing technology to extend component service life and introduces a modular fuel rail-pressure control architecture that gives OEMs greater packaging flexibility across different engine layouts. The design also supports larger engines, including V12 and other multi-bank configurations.
The current generation of HPDI technology has accumulated more than 3 billion kilometers of operation across more than 12,000 trucks in over 35 countries, according to the company.
Westport CEO Dan Sceli noted that Cespira's revenue increased 125% year over year from Q2 2025 to Q2 2026. "With continued gains in efficiency, attractive total cost of ownership and improved fuel price stability, we believe HPDI is well positioned to grow adoption momentum with OEMs and fleets," Sceli said.
Cespira CTO Scott Baker said HPDI 3.0 offers OEMs greater flexibility to expand product portfolios as hydrogen and low-carbon fuel markets develop.
