Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced that ESpanix, Spain's largest internet exchange point (IXP), has selected and deployed Nokia Deepfield Defender to protect its platform and connected networks against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

The deployment allows ESpanix to offer DDoS protection as an optional service to more than 200 national and international networks that exchange traffic at the ESpanix Node, which serves internet users across Spain.

According to the companies, the system detects and mitigates DDoS attacks within seconds, operating entirely within ESpanix's network across six data centers in Madrid and Barcelona. The approach eliminates the need to route traffic through third-party scrubbing infrastructure outside Spain.

Nokia Deepfield Defender uses AI-driven analytics of network telemetry combined with Nokia's Deepfield Secure Genome, a cloud-based data feed that tracks internet security context. The system is designed to remove attack traffic while allowing legitimate data packets to continue flowing.

"DDoS attacks remain a primary threat to our connected networks daily," said Javier Achirica, CTO of ESpanix, adding that the solution ensures local traffic remains local and meets data sovereignty requirements.

The deployment builds on an existing partnership between Nokia and ESpanix. In 2025, ESpanix became the first IXP in Spain to offer 400G connectivity, built on Nokia interconnect and service routers running over Nokia optical transport.

Nokia stated that ESpanix joins a group of European internet exchanges using Nokia Deepfield for member protection and security services.
