Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has launched Cognitive Operations (CO), a platform that combines mission-critical communications, edge computing, and artificial intelligence for industrial field operations.

The platform targets mining, public safety, and defense sectors, offering capabilities including AI-assisted monitoring, real-time 3D digital twin visualization, video analytics, predictive maintenance, and autonomous safety monitoring. Nokia states the platform is designed to create a hybrid wireless network with no single point of access failure.

At the hardware level, Nokia introduced the Cognitive Edge Node (CEN), a rugged device with on-device GPU-accelerated computing intended for field-deployed vehicles and remote locations.

Nokia developed the platform in collaboration with Microsoft and Rajant Corporation. The mining version of CO is available for on-premises deployment and through the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. Rajant's InstaMesh wireless networking technology has been integrated directly into the CEN.

The platform launches with three vertical applications. The mining application delivers AI and communications tools to mine operations. The emergency services application introduces a Vehicle as a Node concept, where response vehicles equipped with the CEN form a distributed field intelligence network, sharing situational data across 5G, Wi-Fi, and satellite. The defense application extends the platform to military operations, enabling vehicle and unit-level connectivity across 5G, tactical radio, and satellite in contested environments.

Lelio Di Martino, General Manager of Cognitive Operations for Nokia, described the launch as "a defining step in Nokia's promise to deliver connected intelligence."
