GlobalFoundries (Nasdaq: GFS) has finalized a definitive agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce's CHIPS Research and Development Office for a $375 million award to support research and development in quantum semiconductor manufacturing.

Under the agreement, GlobalFoundries is eligible to receive up to $375 million over a five-year period, contingent on achieving specified milestones. The funding is directed toward the company's Quantum Technology Solutions (QTS) business, which focuses on scaling domestic quantum chip manufacturing and enabling quantum computing companies to move from research and prototyping toward commercial-scale production.

The company's quantum efforts center on cryogenic CMOS technologies, advanced packaging, and heterogeneous integration. GlobalFoundries operates its semiconductor manufacturing facilities across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, with its Malta, New York location serving as a base for its quantum activities.

"This is another important milestone for Quantum Technology Solutions and our efforts to build a scalable domestic quantum manufacturing ecosystem," said Nicholas Sergeant, vice president and general manager of Quantum Technology Solutions at GlobalFoundries.

Separately, GlobalFoundries said it has entered into a $300 million letter of intent with the same Department of Commerce office to accelerate research and development in silicon photonics. That agreement has not yet been finalized.
