Himax launches eDP TDDI chip for large automotive displays
Himax Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: HIMX) announced the launch of its HX83196/HX83197 series, a single-chip solution that integrates a high-speed embedded DisplayPort (eDP) interface, touch, and display driver for automotive applications, according to a company press release.
The chip series is designed for large-format, high-resolution smart car displays. A single chip supports displays up to 17 inches with 3K resolution, while a two-chip cascaded configuration supports displays up to 30 inches with 6K resolution. The solution features 2,560 source channels and 1,280 touch channels, supporting 60Hz and 90Hz refresh rates.
The HX83197 model incorporates local dimming technology directly into the TDDI, removing the need for a separate timing controller. The series also integrates eDP 1.4 Display Stream Compression technology to reduce bit rate and power consumption, and supports HDR10+. An ambient light sensor interface allows sensor placement directly on the panel without using bezel space.
By integrating an eDP 1.2 interface, the chip eliminates the need for an eDP-to-OLDI bridge IC used in conventional automotive display architectures. A Direct DP architecture option allows a system-on-chip to transmit eDP signals directly to the chip over a single cable without an additional serializer/deserializer.
The product is currently in the design-in stage with multiple panel makers. Himax said it plans to showcase the chip at the SID Vehicle Displays and Interfaces Symposium in Detroit.
"Multiple customer projects are already underway," said Ming-Cheng Chiu, Executive Vice President of Touch and Display Business Unit at Himax.
Himax is headquartered in Tainan, Taiwan, and employs approximately 2,200 people.
