China memory leader CXMT begins small-batch production of HBM3E silicon - report

Investing.com -- ChangXin Memory Technologies has initiated low-volume production of advanced high-bandwidth memory chips, marking a critical step forward in Beijing's bid to circumvent U.S. sanctions and build a self-sustaining semiconductor ecosystem. According to a report from The Information, China's leading memory manufacturer has begun producing HBM3E chips, trailing global industry leaders by just a single generation as domestic tech giants begin integration testing.

The development represents a strategic breakthrough for China’s artificial intelligence ambitions, where progress has been routinely stymied by Washington’s tight export controls on advanced memory hardware. Domestic chip designers including Alibaba Group’s T-Head unit and Cambricon Technologies are actively testing CXMT’s HBM3E silicon, with plans to integrate the memory into commercial processors as early as next year.

Early commercial deployment among local designers could provide CXMT with vital operational feedback and production data needed to scale manufacturing effectively. High-bandwidth memory has emerged as a central bottleneck in global AI infrastructure, as traditional suppliers struggle to meet surging demand from primary chip designers like Nvidia and Google.

Despite the technical milestone, CXMT faces severe operational headwinds tied to low manufacturing yields and restricted access to advanced fabrication equipment. Western trade sanctions continue to limit the acquisition of cutting-edge foreign semiconductor tools, leaving CXMT’s overall HBM technology estimated to be three to five years behind dominant global rivals SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics, and Micron Technology, according to the report.

The production milestone follows CXMT’s landmark Shanghai initial public offering, where the memory giant raised $8.6 billion to fund capital expenditure and technology development. Market enthusiasm for China's premier memory play sent shares surging 472% in their trading debut, underscoring intense investor appetite for domestic semiconductor leaders.

The capital injection coincides with a dramatic financial turnaround driven by the global AI hardware cycle and expanding domestic footprint. CXMT reported first-half revenue surged nearly tenfold to 150.3 billion yuan ($22.3 billion), delivering a net profit of 77.6 billion yuan ($11.5 billion) and successfully reversing year-earlier losses.

Established in 2016 with local government backing, CXMT has grown into the world's fourth-largest manufacturer of standard DRAM, serving as a pillar of China’s broader industrial policy for chip self-reliance. While global competitors move into mass production of next-generation HBM4 architecture, CXMT's initial HBM3E rollout targets a targeted expansion timeline aimed at broader commercial availability by 2027.
