Descartes Systems Group (Nasdaq: DSGX) announced new AI-powered Image Document Management (IDM) capabilities aimed at helping customs brokers, freight forwarders, and logistics service providers process trade documents more efficiently, according to a company statement.

The solution is embedded within Descartes' existing customs and transportation applications, allowing users to extract and prepare data from commercial invoices, bills of lading, and packing lists without switching between separate systems. The company says this approach reduces manual data entry and eliminates what it describes as "swivel-chair" workflows between multiple platforms.

The IDM capabilities operate through Descartes' Global Logistics Network and use logistics-trained AI agents to interpret multiple document types associated with a single shipment. The system is designed to prepare data that can initiate customs entries and transportation transactions without requiring re-entry of information across documents.

"Entering commercial invoice data is one of the most labor-intensive activities in the import process, especially when shipments include complex commercial invoices with hundreds of line items," said Scott Sangster, General Manager, Logistics Service Providers at Descartes.

Ken Wood, Executive Vice President of Product Management at Descartes, noted that the solution is intended to address document processing within existing workflows rather than as a standalone application. "The goal is not simply to read a shipment document, but to quickly understand its logistics context and rapidly prepare the data needed to move the customs entry or shipment forward faster and more accurately," Wood said.

The company states the solution does not require custom integrations or customer-trained AI models, as the capabilities are built into its existing platform.
