Himax and Waferlock launch palm vein smart lock with on-device AI

August 18, 2026 3:21 AM

Himax Technologies (NASDAQ: HIMX) and Waferlock Corporation (TPEx: 6474) announced that Himax's WiseEye palm vein biometric authentication technology has been integrated into the Waferlock L322 smart lock, which is now commercially available.

The L322 supports multiple access methods, including palm vein recognition, RFID cards, PIN codes, mechanical keys, and an optional mobile app. It is also compatible with EasyCard, iPASS, and MIFARE contactless cards.

Himax's WiseEye solution combines an ultralow power AI processor, an image sensor, and palm vein recognition algorithms. Authentication is performed entirely on the device, without cloud connectivity, which the companies say reduces privacy and security risks. The system uses liveness detection to verify that the biometric input is from a live person.

Palm vein authentication reads vein patterns beneath the skin, which the companies say makes it less susceptible to issues such as perspiration, worn fingerprints, or skin conditions compared to conventional fingerprint authentication.

"We will continue working closely with ecosystem partners to bring WiseEye's ultralow power AI and palm vein biometric authentication technology to a broader range of smart locks, access control systems, and other intelligent edge devices," said Mark Chen, Vice President of Smart Sensing Business at Himax.

Waferlock, headquartered in Taichung, Taiwan, markets smart lock products in Taiwan, Europe, the United States, and Japan, with a distribution network spanning more than 25 countries. Himax is a fabless semiconductor company headquartered in Tainan, Taiwan.
