Rekor wins $22M+ South Carolina DOT contract for traffic sensors

Rekor Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: REKR) has been selected by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) for a statewide seven-year contract with an expected potential value in excess of $22 million, according to a company statement. The award remains subject to final contract negotiations.

Under the contract, Rekor will maintain, upgrade, and modernize SCDOT's statewide network of traffic count, vehicle classification, and speed monitoring sites, as well as the agency's weigh-in-motion (WIM) sites. The work involves replacing aging in-road sensor infrastructure with roadside systems the company describes as AI-powered and non-intrusive.

Rekor will operate under a Data-as-a-Service model, in which the company owns, installs, monitors, and services the infrastructure, while SCDOT receives validated data rather than equipment to manage directly.

The contract is structured to allow cooperative purchasing by South Carolina cities, counties, municipalities, and metropolitan planning organizations at SCDOT's discretion. Local agencies would be able to order directly against the statewide contract without conducting a separate competitive procurement process. Rekor said this mechanism could increase the contract's total value above the $22 million baseline over the seven-year term.

"South Carolina has been one of the clearest examples anywhere of what happens when an agency modernizes how it collects roadway data. This contract takes that work statewide," said Mark Phillips, General Manager of Rekor Systems. "Opening the contract to every city and county in the state means a small municipality gets the same technology as the state, without running its own time-consuming procurement process."

The systems to be deployed include traffic count, classification, and speed monitoring sites delivering Federal Highway Administration 13-bin classification data, along with WIM sites capable of real-time overweight vehicle detection.
