Econolite wins Utah contract to deploy Ouster lidar at 160 intersections
Econolite has been awarded a multimillion-dollar contract expansion from the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to deploy Ouster, Inc.'s (Nasdaq: OUST) BlueCity lidar traffic management system at an additional 160 intersections statewide, according to a press release from Ouster.
The expansion follows a 2025 contract in which Econolite deployed Ouster BlueCity across more than 100 intersections using Rev7 digital lidar sensors. The new agreement brings UDOT's total contracted Ouster BlueCity footprint to nearly 300 intersection and roadway deployments.
The latest deployment integrates Ouster's OS1 Max Rev8 digital lidar sensor, which the company claims offers up to 500-foot advance detection and what it describes as the world's first native color lidar detection system. The system simultaneously captures color data and 3D depth information to generate digital traffic twins.
The expanded deployment follows a December 2024 evaluation by the Utah State Evaluation Committee, which assessed six lidar proposals. Econolite's Ouster BlueCity solution received the highest overall vendor score, ranking first in the lidar hardware and perception software categories.
The system is designed to integrate with UDOT's existing traffic control infrastructure, including Econolite Cobalt traffic signal controllers, through an open API architecture. Installation is reported to take between three and five hours per intersection.
Safety applications enabled by the system include automated crosswalk extensions, dilemma zone protection, turning-vehicle yield warnings, and real-time vehicle-to-everything alerts via roadside units. The system also includes edge-level privacy technology that blurs pedestrians and cyclists.
"The scaling of Ouster BlueCity's footprint to hundreds of intersections in Utah is a powerful testament to the real-world value the solution delivers daily to transportation agencies and municipalities both large and small," said Asad Lesani, VP of Global ITS Solutions at Ouster.
Ouster states that BlueCity also powers lidar traffic management deployments in Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee, which it describes as among the largest fully integrated deployments of this type in the United States.
