Minecraft 27 Preview: Dappled Forest, Poplar Trees, Chaos Cubed
Minecraft Live from TwitchCon Rotterdam gave players one of the clearest looks yet at where Minecraft is heading next. Rather than focusing entirely on the upcoming Chaos Cubed release, Mojang used the event to preview future content, reveal a brand-new biome, discuss the next Minecraft movie, and share details about Minecraft Dungeons II.
What Minecraft 27 Means for the Future
Community discussion across the official MCPEDL page and other Minecraft platforms quickly shifted from Chaos Cubed itself to what comes after it. The biggest surprise was the reveal of the Dappled Forest, a completely new biome that introduces fresh building materials, environmental storytelling, and a visual style unlike anything currently available in Minecraft.
During Minecraft Live, Agnes Larsson explained that Minecraft is designed to remain a generational game that continues evolving for many years. The team discussed a long-term vision centered around adventures, exploration, creativity, and meaningful journeys. While Chaos Cubed arrives first, the reveals shown during the presentation suggest that future updates will continue expanding these core ideas.

Dappled Forest Is the Biggest New Biome Reveal
The centerpiece of the presentation was the Dappled Forest. Mojang described it as a cozy forest biome inspired by the warm seasonal colors found in places like Michigan and Sweden. The biome immediately stands out because it replaces traditional green landscapes with a mixture of orange, red, and yellow tones.
Instead of focusing on combat or rare resources, the Dappled Forest emphasizes atmosphere. The goal is to make exploration itself feel rewarding. Fallen logs, colorful vegetation, mushrooms, and new trees combine to create a location that feels distinctly different from existing forest biomes.
This biome is still in early development, and Mojang confirmed that additional features will continue being added before testing begins later in the summer.
Poplar Trees and New Building Materials
The most recognizable addition is the Poplar Tree. Its colorful leaves help create the biomes autumn appearance while introducing an entirely new wood family. According to Mojang, the Poplar Wood Set features a warm gray tone that blends naturally with Pale Oak and stone blocks.
The developers highlighted how useful the material could become for builders. Rather than competing directly with existing wood types, Poplar fills a unique visual space between bright and dark construction palettes.
- New Poplar Trees with multiple leaf colors.
- Warm gray Poplar wood blocks.
- Decorative Poplar door with diamond-shaped window.
- Improved compatibility with stone and Pale Oak builds.
- New visual options for villages, houses, and fantasy structures.

Red Shrubs Bring More Decorative Freedom
Another important addition is the Red Shrub. Unlike normal bushes, these plants remain red regardless of where they are placed. Most vegetation in Minecraft changes color depending on biome conditions, but Red Shrubs maintain a consistent appearance.
This seemingly small feature could become extremely popular with builders. Parks, gardens, pathways, and custom landscapes often require precise color control, and Red Shrubs provide exactly that. Combined with mushrooms and other decorative details scattered throughout the biome, they help create a much richer environment.
Abandoned Camp Adds Mystery to Exploration
Mojang also revealed a new structure known as the Abandoned Camp. Rather than functioning as a major dungeon or progression milestone, this location exists to encourage storytelling.
The developers explained that discovering an abandoned campsite naturally creates questions. Who stayed there? What journey were they on? Why did they leave? These unanswered questions help players imagine their own stories while exploring the world.
The structure reflects a growing focus on environmental storytelling. Instead of telling players exactly what happened, Minecraft increasingly creates locations that inspire curiosity and imagination.
Wool Stairs and Wool Slabs Finally Arrive
For years, builders have requested more decorative wool block variants. Mojang confirmed that the new Game Drop will introduce both wool stairs and wool slabs, originally created to help the Abandoned Camp look more detailed.
What started as a solution for one structure quickly became a feature with much wider potential. Colored stairs and slabs allow smoother roofs, better furniture, more realistic tents, decorative interiors, and countless creative building possibilities.
- Create colorful market stalls and tents.
- Build smoother furniture designs.
- Improve decorative interiors.
- Add more detail to fantasy builds.
- Expand creative construction options.
Many players consider this one of the most practical additions shown during the entire presentation.
Chaos Cubed Opens the Door for New Mechanics
Although the event focused heavily on future content, Chaos Cubed remains an important part of Minecrafts direction. The update introduces Sulfur Caves, Sulfur Blocks, Cinnabar Blocks, Geysers, and the Sulfur Cube.
The Sulfur Cube began as an experiment inspired by ball physics. After multiple prototypes, Mojang transformed the concept into a cube-shaped mob capable of absorbing blocks and changing behavior. Community feedback even inspired TNT functionality, creating entirely new gameplay possibilities.
The update demonstrates Mojangs interest in sandbox mechanics rather than scripted experiences. Players are already creating transportation systems, mini-games, and creative contraptions using the new physics systems.
Minecraft Dungeons II Expands the Universe
Minecraft Dungeons II received a dedicated segment during the show. The sequel introduces a completely new story, previously unseen environments, and additional gameplay systems.
One of the biggest reveals was the Deep Dark portal and the Twisted Warden. Unlike ordinary enemies, the Twisted Warden is described as a powerful boss connected to the Deep Dark. Players will explore this iconic location for the first time in a Minecraft Dungeons title.
The game is scheduled to launch later in 2026, with additional information expected in the coming months.
A Minecraft Movie Squared Arrives Next Year
The second major announcement involved the future of Minecraft outside the game itself. Mojang officially revealed the title of the next movie: A Minecraft Movie Squared.
Returning cast members include Jack Black and Jason Momoa, while Matt Berry joins the project in a new role. The presentation also introduced Kirsten Dunst as Alex, one of the most recognizable characters in Minecraft.
The movie promises new biomes, new characters, and additional creatures while taking viewers deeper into the Minecraft universe. Mojang also announced the Minecraft Build Challenge, where the winning creation will appear in the film or its end credits. Finalists will receive private screenings and other rewards.
