Insurance Industry Adds 2,700 Jobs in March
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 15, 2016
The insurance industry gained 2,700 jobs for the month of March, according to the latest employment numbers from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday, April 1, 2015.
The Economic Situation Report revealed that the insurance industry grew by 0.10 percent last month and now sits at 2,585,900 employed insurance workers with an unemployment rate of 3.4 percent. Over the past 12 months, the total number of employed insurance workers has increased by 61,000 or 2.4 percent from 2.52 million in March 2015, while the unemployment rate jumped by 1.3 percent from 2.1 percent.
The insurance carriers and related activities subsector, which includes insurance carriers, agencies and other brokerages, typically makes up more than half of the job growth within the finance and insurance sector. However, last month the subsector only accounted for 17 percent of the 15,100 jobs gained in finance and insurance. Credit intermediation and related activities accounted for 9,300 jobs, or 61.5 percent of jobs gained in the sector.
Total nonfarm payroll employment across all industries increased by 215,000 in March while the unemployment rate increased slightly to 5 percent, or 8 million unemployed persons. Over the year, the unemployment rate and the number of unemployed persons has decreased by 0.5 percentage point and 591,000, respectively. Last month, employment gains largely occurred in retail trade, construction and healthcare while job losses occurred in manufacturing and mining.
