Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Elects Three New US-Based Partners

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Global law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is proud to announce the promotions of Mary Lehner, Caroline Richard and Ryan Suda to partner, effective May 1. Ms. Lehner previously served as counsel with the firm, while Ms. Richard and Mr. Suda were formerly associates. Both Ms. Lehner and Ms. Richard are based in the firm’s Washington, DC office, while Mr. Suda is based in the firm’s New York office.

Over the past two years, Freshfields has made a bold play to significantly build its US practice by adding nine high-profile lateral partners. As part of these strategic advancements, the firm has emphasized its commitment to diversity and developing organic growth within the firm. This is reflected in this year’s promotions, particularly given that both Ms. Richard and Mr. Suda began their legal careers as associates with the firm.

Mary Lehner is a member of the firm’s Antitrust, Competition and Trade practice. She represents clients before the US Department of Justice (DOJ), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the state attorneys general on the antitrust aspects of mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, distribution, intellectual property arrangements and other competitive conduct. She has extensive experience in a variety of industries, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, energy, information technologies, consumer products, construction and publishing. Prior to joining Freshfields, Ms. Lehner served as an antitrust advisor to two FTC chairmen and was a lead attorney in the FTC’s Bureau of Competition. She currently serves as vice chair of the Mergers & Acquisitions Committee for the Antitrust Section of the American Bar Association. She received her JD from the University of Chicago Law School and her BA from the College of William and Mary.

Caroline Richard specializes in international arbitration. She has acted in several high-profile commercial and investment treaty arbitrations in the energy, mining, infrastructure and telecommunications sectors, among others, in Latin America, Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa. She is recognized as a leader in the field and is listed in Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration 2016. Having begun her career in Freshfields’ Paris office, she was handpicked by firm leadership to help expand the arbitration practice in the key arbitration centers of London, and ultimately, Washington, DC. Since 2011, Ms. Richard has co-taught a course on investment treaty arbitration as an adjunct professor at American University. She also serves as an advisory board member to the US-based Institute for Transnational Arbitration and the Young Canadian Arbitration Practitioners group. Ms. Richard holds an LLM from Harvard Law School, an LLM from Cambridge University and an LLB / DESS from the Université de Montréal.

Ryan Suda is a member of the firm’s Finance practice group, where he advises financial institutions, asset managers, private equity funds and hedge funds in structured finance transactions and other complex financings, often in a cross-border context. He focuses in particular on securitizations of institutional leveraged loans, known as collateralized loan obligations (CLOs), which provide funding to the corporate credit market. In addition to CLOs, Mr. Suda advises clients on regulatory issues in relation to securities laws and the Volcker Rule and has experience in derivatives, leveraged finance, secured and unsecured credit facilities, private placements, asset finance and acquisition finance. While at Freshfields, he has been seconded to the firm’s London office and to the legal department of a major investment bank. He began his legal career at Freshfields and has been with the firm for more than 10 years. Mr. Suda holds a JD from New York University School of Law and a BA from New York University College of Arts and Science.
