Fidelity Charitable® Issues Guidance Update on Hurricane Harvey Relief

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Hurricane Harvey slammed into Texas on August 25 and stalled for several days over the Gulf coast, bringing torrential rains and catastrophic flooding to Texas and Louisiana. The storm is the largest to hit the U.S. in more than a decade, bringing 50 inches of rain in some area—more than double the rainfall of Hurricane Katrina.

This deluge has led to a lengthy rescue and relief period. In the areas where floodwaters have receded, many residents have left shelters to begin cleanup efforts in their homes and communities. But roads and highways remain underwater in areas, and search and rescue efforts are expected to last for at least two more weeks. Until the floodwaters fully recede, it will be difficult to assess the total impact of the storm or predict when crews will be able to fully address storm cleanup. However, all signs point to a recovery period of months and years.

How to help nowFidelity Charitable has collaborated with the Center for Disaster Philanthropy to provide the following list of organizations that are currently providing relief services for Hurricane Harvey. While this is not a comprehensive list of organizations raising money for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, these organizations are highlighted because they have existing operations on the region, the ability to incorporate a large influx of donations, and a strong, established record of excellence in disaster relief services.

Following a natural disaster, there can be an increased risk of fraud committed by individuals preying upon the good intentions of people wanting to help; donors should take care that the organizations they are supporting are legitimate. Fidelity Charitable makes grants only to IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) public charities, such as the organizations below.

Please note that in times of a domestic disaster, the American National Red Cross plays a central role in coordinating and responding to the immediate needs of those affected. While the Red Cross is independent from the government, it was chartered by Congress in 1905 with the responsibility to respond to domestic and international disasters.

How to help with long-term recoveryWhile there is urgent need for immediate relief, we expect the relief efforts will extend well beyond the immediate aftermath of the storm, as residents of the region begin to recover and rebuild their homes, businesses and lives. If you are interested in supporting long-term recovery efforts, the Center for Disaster Philanthropy has created the Hurricane Harvey fund, which will provide support in the months and years to come, with a particular focus on vulnerable populations.
