A.M.BestTV: Insurers Examine Impact of Concussion Risk

May 8, 2015 2:30 PM EDT

OLDWICK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- This episode of A.M.BestTV looks at highlights of a recent webinar where a panel of legal, medical and insurance professionals explore how concussions are changing the way high school, college and amateur sports are being looked at, coached and insured. James Decker, vice president of the commercial lines division at Philadelphia Insurance Companies, described the impact concussions have on the insurance industry as still unknown. He said concussions are changing the way insurers look at risk, specifically in higher-contact sports. When underwriting schools, Decker said, “The first thing you’re looking for is concussion awareness.” He said there should be a concussion management program training place for educating staff and volunteers for the signs of concussions.

Allan D. Goulding, an attorney with Curtin & Heefner LLP, explained the legal ramifications in two particular areas: state capitols and courtrooms. “In the capitols, we’re seeing legislation being passed in almost every state to try to assess and to the extent possible, minimize head injuries. In the courtroom, what we see are the concerns about the catastrophic injuries that can result in the crippling damage awards,” he said.

Webinar panelists also include:

  • AJ Morgan, area senior vice president, RPS Bollinger Sports & Leisure
