Boats Group Data Shows How the Online Boat-Buying Journey Is Changing
As consumers do more research before contacting a seller, Boats Group is expanding the signals and tools available to help marine businesses identify and prioritize buyer intent
Today's boat shopper can search inventory, compare models and pricing, watch reviews, research manufacturers, save listings, and return repeatedly to boats of interest before ever identifying themselves to a seller. By the time that shopper submits an inquiry, they may be significantly further along in their decision-making process.
For sellers, that creates an important shift. Lead volume alone is becoming a less complete measure of marketplace performance, while the intent and quality behind each inquiry are becoming increasingly important.
"Consumers have more information available to them than ever before, and they're using it to make more decisions before they contact a seller," said
The shift mirrors what has already happened across other high-consideration purchases. In residential real estate, for example, consumers routinely discover and research properties online, then contact an agent they already work with rather than submitting an inquiry on every home that interests them.
Boating increasingly follows a similar pattern. A shopper may conduct multiple searches on Boat Trader or YachtWorld, view numerous listings, return to particular boats, research a manufacturer, watch a boat review, and ultimately contact a dealer or broker directly. A traditional lead captures only one possible action within that much broader journey.
Boats Group's research linking online marketplace behavior to subsequent boat registrations has provided greater visibility into that relationship, including purchases that cannot be traced through a traditionally submitted lead. The findings reinforce a simple reality: a buyer does not have to submit a lead to be influenced by a marketplace.
At the same time, when consumers can answer more questions themselves — researching specifications, comparing inventory, evaluating pricing, and narrowing their consideration set online — some exploratory inquiries that once occurred earlier in the process may no longer be necessary. When consumers do make contact, they can be more informed and more intentional about the boats they are considering.
That makes understanding the behavior surrounding a lead increasingly valuable.
Boats Group is investing in new capabilities across its marketplaces to help dealers and brokers better understand, qualify, and prioritize those opportunities. New buyer-intent tools bring together lead activity with signals including frequency and recency of marketplace activity, repeat engagement with inventory, saved boats, searches, and other shopping behaviors.
Together, those signals can give sales teams a more complete view of the buyer — not simply who submitted a lead, but what that shopper did before and around it — helping sellers identify which opportunities may warrant the fastest follow-up and where buyers appear to be in their shopping journey.
"More leads have traditionally been treated as synonymous with better performance, but that misses much of what we can now understand about the consumer," Grabowski said. "If we can help a seller distinguish between an initial inquiry and a shopper who has repeatedly researched the category, returned to inventory, and demonstrated sustained purchase intent, that makes the lead significantly more actionable."
As the digital shopping journey evolves, Boats Group believes marketplace performance will increasingly be understood through a combination of visibility, engagement, buyer intent, lead quality, and ultimately sales outcomes — rather than lead quantity alone.
"The goal hasn't changed," Grabowski said. "We want to connect serious boat buyers with the right inventory and the right sellers. What is changing is how much more we can understand about that journey and use those insights to create better connections."
