Couples Finish Wedding Invitations 10 Weeks Ahead, Data Show

October 30, 2026 3:10 PM EDT

Save the dates are finished a median of 7 months before the wedding, and 29% of invitations land within the six to eight weeks etiquette advice recommends

Couples finished their wedding invitations a median of 10 weeks before the wedding, according to an analysis of 11,250 save the dates and invitations made in WeddingTemplates browser-based editor, where couples add names, dates and details to a template and download the result. Save the dates were finished a median of 7 months before the wedding.

Etiquette guidance in the Emily Post Institutes wedding planning timeline is to assemble and mail invitations six to eight weeks before the wedding date. In the data, 29% of couples finished their invitations within that window, 58% finished them more than eight weeks ahead and 13% less than six weeks before the wedding. The analysis covers weddings held between July 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026.

Key findings (WeddingTemplates data for weddings held from July 1, 2025, to September 30, 2026):

  • Invitations were finished a median of 10 weeks before the wedding: 29% within the six to eight weeks etiquette guidance recommends, 58% earlier and 13% later.
  • Save the dates were finished a median of 7 months before the wedding: 32% within the three to six months the Emily Post timeline lists, 61% earlier and 7% later.
  • Digital invitations, shared by email, text or WhatsApp, went out a median of 7 weeks before the wedding; print-ready invitation files were finished a median of 11 weeks ahead.
  • Couples who made both pieces finished their invitations a median of 20 weeks after their save the dates.
  • RSVP cards carried a reply-by date a median of 4 weeks before the wedding; 36% fell within the two to three weeks etiquette guidance suggests.
  • Thank you cards were made a median of 5 weeks after the wedding, and 84% within three months.
  • By wedding month, invitation lead times ranged from a median of 12 weeks for December weddings to 9 weeks for March weddings.

“Etiquette gives couples a window for each piece of wedding stationery, and our data show where couples actually land in it,” said Abraham, CEO of DigiVault LLC (WeddingTemplates). “Printing, addressing and mailing all take time, so the day a couple finishes their invitations is only the first step toward the mailbox.”

When couples finish their invitations

Couples finished their invitations a median of 10 weeks before the wedding. A quarter of couples finished them at least 14 weeks ahead, and a quarter finished them 7 weeks or less before the wedding. From starting an invitation in the editor to finishing it, couples took a median of 2 days, and a quarter took more than 9 days. The Emily Post Institutes timeline also suggests ordering invitations and other printed pieces six to nine months before the wedding and addressing them three to six months ahead, which makes mailing six to eight weeks out the last step of a longer process.

Printed and digital invitations

Of the invitations in the data, 73% were downloaded as print-ready files and 27% were shared digitally by email, text or WhatsApp. Couples who shared their invitations digitally sent them a median of 7 weeks before the wedding. Couples who downloaded print-ready files finished them a median of 11 weeks ahead, before printing, addressing and mailing them.

For weddings held from January to September 2026, couples finished their invitations a median of 10 weeks ahead, compared with 11 weeks for weddings held from July to December 2025. Digital shares made up 29% of invitations for the 2026 weddings and 24% for the 2025 weddings.

How far ahead save the dates are made

Save the dates were finished a median of 7 months before the wedding. The Emily Post Institutes timeline places them three to six months before the wedding, “or earlier.” In the data, 32% of couples made their save the dates within that range, 61% made them earlier and 7% made them less than three months before the wedding. A quarter of couples finished their save the dates at least 10 months ahead. Of the save the dates, 41% were shared digitally and 59% were downloaded as print-ready files. Digital save the dates went out a median of 6 months before the wedding, and print-ready files were finished a median of 8 months ahead. Couples who made both a save the date and an invitation finished the invitation a median of 20 weeks after the save the date.

RSVP deadlines

Couples who printed a reply-by date on their RSVP cards set it a median of 4 weeks before the wedding. The Emily Post Institute suggests a reply-by date usually two to three weeks before the wedding, which gives hosts time to follow up with guests who havent replied and to give caterers an accurate head count. In the data, 36% of couples set their reply-by date within that range, 57% set it more than three weeks before the wedding and 7% less than two weeks before.

Lead times by month and country

Lead times varied with the wedding month. Couples marrying in December finished their invitations a median of 12 weeks ahead, the longest of any month, and couples marrying in March 9 weeks ahead, the shortest. Weddings from June through October made up 62% of the invitations in the data, with a median lead time of 10 weeks. By country, couples in the United States finished their invitations a median of 10 weeks before the wedding and couples in Canada a median of 11 weeks.

After the wedding

Couples made their thank you cards a median of 5 weeks after the wedding. The Emily Post Institute says all thank-you notes should be written within three months of receiving a gift, and that couples do not get a years grace period. In the data, 84% of couples made their thank you cards within three months of the wedding, and 41% within the first month.

From finished file to mailbox

A finished file is not a mailed invitation. Printing at home or at a print shop, assembling each suite, addressing envelopes and buying postage all come before the mailbox, and the Emily Post Institute advises taking an assembled invitation to the post office to be weighed before buying stamps. Once mailed, most invitations arrive within days. In April through June 2026, the latest quarter the U.S. Postal Service has published, it delivered 87.7% of single-piece First-Class Mail with a two-day delivery standard on time and 88.7% of mail with a three-to-five-day standard on time. At least 98.4% arrived within its standard plus three days.

About the data

WeddingTemplates analyzed 4,910 save the dates and 6,340 invitations made in its editor by couples whose weddings were held between July 1, 2025, and September 30, 2026, and whose wedding date could be read from the design. A design counts as finished on the day it was first downloaded as a print-ready file or first shared digitally. Each couple is counted once per piece, and test and staff accounts are excluded. RSVP figures cover 3,120 reply cards with a printed reply-by date, and thank you card figures cover 1,690 couples whose weddings were held by June 30, 2026, so that each had at least three months to make their cards. Couples in the United States made 81% of the designs, couples in Canada 8% and couples in other countries 11%. The figures show when couples finished their designs, not when they mailed them, and they cover couples who use WeddingTemplates rather than all couples. The full analysis is published on the WeddingTemplates blog.
