InterDigital Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) initiated patent infringement litigation against Amazon across multiple jurisdictions, the company announced. The lawsuits were filed in U.S. Federal District Court in Delaware, Rio de Janeiro State Court in Brazil, Munich Regional Court in Germany, and the Local Division of Mannheim in the Unified Patent Court.
The patents at issue relate to video content compression technology and high dynamic range (HDR) technology for improving picture quality. InterDigital alleges Amazon infringes these patents through devices including FireTV and Kindle, as well as through its Prime Video service.
According to InterDigital, Amazon previously initiated litigation against the company earlier this year. Josh Schmidt, InterDigital's Chief Legal Officer, stated that Amazon's decision to pursue litigation showed the company was "more interested in litigating than negotiating" rather than reaching licensing agreements through negotiations.
InterDigital describes itself as a mobile, video and artificial intelligence technology research and development company that licenses its innovations to companies providing wireless communications devices, consumer electronics, and cloud-based services. The company was founded in 1972 and trades on Nasdaq.
The information was disclosed in a company press release statement.
