Uber acquires Belgian startup Segments.ai to boost data-labeling unit

Investing.com -- Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) has acquired Belgian startup Segments.ai to strengthen its data-labeling business.
The founders of Y Combinator-backed Segments.ai, Bert De Brabandere and Otto Debals, along with their staff will join Uber's data-labeling division, Uber AI Solutions, according to a LinkedIn post from the San Francisco-based company.
Uber AI Solutions has been working on LiDAR and large-scale data annotation for nearly a decade, delivering autonomy, safety, and AI advancements through billions of labels on real-world data.
The acquisition aligns with Uber's strategy to expand its lidar and multi-sensor data annotation capabilities for global customers. Segments.ai brings lidar annotation tools, domain expertise, and an established client base to Uber.
The rideshare company expressed excitement about working with the Segments.ai team to develop the future of lidar data annotation.
