Trump says U.S. and Denmark reached permanent security deal over Greenland

Investing.com -- President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States has entered into a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland that grants the U.S. permanent control over security matters in Greenland.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated the agreement "gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns."

The president said the arrangement will have no cost to the United States and described it as an "Infinite Life" Agreement with no end date.

Under the terms, no U.S. adversary can have a base in Greenland, maintain a military presence, or make sensitive investments without express written approval from the United States, according to Trump’s announcement.

"We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland," Trump wrote. He added that the U.S. will work with Greenland’s people on development and construction.

The deal falls short of full acquisition of Greenland, an idea Trump has promoted since his first term in office. He proposed buying Greenland from Denmark on several occasions, often resulting in diplomatic spats between the two nations.

Trump revived the idea in late 2024 and early 2025, citing Arctic security, U.S. military positioning, and mineral resources as justifications. Greenlandic leaders have repeatedly stated the island is not for sale.

"For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it," Trump stated in his announcement.
