Tesla to unveil Cybercab Texas today, details are few

Investing.com -- Tesla Inc will present its two-seater Cybercab at an event in Texas today, providing a closer look at the autonomous vehicle that CEO Elon Musk has described as essential to making the company a leading player in driverless transportation.

The electric vehicle manufacturer operates a limited robotaxi ridehailing service using autonomous Model Y vehicles, some equipped with human safety monitors and others without. The company plans to make the Cybercab, which has no steering wheel, the primary driverless vehicle in its expanding robotaxi network.

Tesla has released minimal information about the event, which it calls the "Cybercab Launch Event." Cybercab engineer Eric Earley stated on X that the event will start at 5:45 pm ET today in downtown Austin, with additional details to be provided to invited guests.

Musk previously unveiled the Cybercab in October 2024 at a Los Angeles-area movie studio. Tesla's robotaxi expansion has not met Musk's projected timelines, with analysts pointing to slower-than-anticipated growth in recent months.

Tesla launched a small pilot program in Austin, Texas, in June 2025 and has since extended its robotaxi service to several cities in Texas and Florida. The service primarily operates in outlying areas that are less complex to navigate than city centers.

The company's $1.4 trillion market value, which exceeds that of any other automaker, is partly based on expectations for its driverless vehicle business. Tesla's traditional electric vehicle operations face growing competition from global rivals, particularly Chinese manufacturers.

Musk has stated the Cybercab will become Tesla's highest-volume vehicle, serving a worldwide robotaxi network and enabling individual owners to include or exclude their vehicles from a Tesla-operated driverless ridehailing fleet. Production started in April 2026, though Musk noted in April that initial production "will be very slow."

The speed of vehicle deployment remains uncertain. Federal regulations restrict the number of vehicles without steering wheels and pedals that manufacturers can sell. While manufacturers can test unlimited numbers of such vehicles, this would prevent Tesla from charging fares.

Tesla lacks permits in California to operate a robotaxi service or test driverless vehicles without a safety driver present.

In July 2025, Musk predicted the robotaxi network would grow at a "hyper-exponential rate" and reach half the U.S. population by the end of 2025. These projections did not materialize, and Musk and company executives have recently adopted a more measured approach, citing safety concerns.

Texas state records show Tesla had 420 autonomous vehicles registered as of Wednesday evening, including 45 Cybercab vehicles. Alphabet's Waymo, the current U.S. leader in driverless taxis, has 988 vehicles registered in Texas.
