OpenAI annualized revenue at $50bn, far below reports - FT
Investing.com -- OpenAI's annualized revenue stands at approximately $50bn as of September, about $20bn below figures previously reported to investors, according to financial documents reviewed by The Financial Times.
The AI company recently informed investors that its annualized revenue was approaching $50bn at the end of September. This figure falls far short of the $70bn that was reported by multiple media outlets late last month based on information provided to investors.
The discrepancy stems from differences in how OpenAI and its rival Anthropic calculate annualized revenue. Anthropic includes revenue from sales through cloud partners such as AWS and Google Cloud in its calculations, while OpenAI does not include such partner revenue in its figures.
Investors attempting to create a direct comparison between the two companies' revenues led to the higher estimates. Earlier attempts to adjust OpenAI's revenue figures resulted in reports that the company's annualized revenue reached $40bn in August.
OpenAI has told investors its revenues have grown more than 70% during the period. The annualized revenue metric serves as a key indicator of overall demand for AI technology and influences infrastructure spending decisions in the sector.
