Mike Johnson will not lead House Republicans next year
Investing.com -- Speaker Mike Johnson will not continue as House Republican leader following the party's election defeat, multipled news outlets reported on Wednesday citing people familiar with his plans. Johnson informed his staff of the decision during a meeting Wednesday morning.
The Louisiana Republican campaigned in 36 states over the two-year election cycle and helped raise more than $526 million for individual candidates and his endorsed super political action committee by mid-October.
Democrats won at least 228 House seats as of Wednesday morning, surpassing the 218 needed for a majority. Republicans won 139 districts, with 68 races still to be called. NBC News projected Democrats could reach 258 seats compared to 177 for Republicans.
Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the current second-ranking House GOP leader, is reportedly seeking to replace Johnson. Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio is also running for the position, several news outlets reported. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the third-ranking Republican leader, may enter the race as well.
Johnson did not say whether he would remain in Congress. Voters expressed dissatisfaction with the high cost of living and an unpopular war with Iran, turning against President Donald Trump and Republican candidates.
Democrats currently hold 214 seats in the House.
