Iran denies requesting talks with US, defies Trump
Investing.com -- Iran's Foreign Ministry said today that Tehran did not request negotiations with the United States, contradicting statements made by President Donald Trump earlier in the day.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran had not sought negotiations with the U.S. but had accepted a visit by a Qatari mediator to Iran, according to Iranian state television.
Trump said today that the United States had agreed to talks with Iran after Tehran asked to continue negotiations. The president also said the June ceasefire between the two nations was over.
Baghaei announced that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will visit Oman to discuss and arrange mechanisms for safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Iran remains determined to ensure safe maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and continues cooperation with Oman, according to ISNA news agency.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson added that any U.S. breach of commitments will be met with "reciprocal action," state media reported.
