Greenland PM warns U.S. still seeking to take control of island

Investing.com -- Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen cautioned on Monday that the United States still aims to control the Arctic island, even though U.S. President Donald Trump has ruled out using military force.

Speaking through a translator in an address to parliament, Nielsen stated: "The view upon Greenland and the population has not changed: Greenland is to be tied to the U.S. and governed from there."

Nielsen claimed the U.S. continues to seek "paths to ownership and control over Greenland."

At the start of 2026, Trump intensified his calls for U.S. control over Greenland, pointing to national security concerns related to Russia and China. These demands created tensions that threatened to divide the NATO alliance.

While Trump has since stepped back from threats of force, he has claimed to have secured complete U.S. access to Greenland through a NATO agreement, though specific details of this arrangement remain unclear.
