Google demonstrates quantum computing breakthrough, cuts errors 40-fold

Investing.com -- Google’s Quantum AI team has demonstrated a technique that could help overcome a major bottleneck in quantum computing, reducing errors roughly 40-fold on its Willow processor, according to research published Thursday in Science.

The technique, known as “magic state cultivation,” addresses the high cost of producing reliable quantum states needed to run complex quantum programs. Some estimates suggest magic state production could consume up to 95% of a quantum computer’s capacity, leaving fewer resources for computation.

Magic states enable quantum processors to perform operations required for universal quantum computing. But producing them with sufficiently low error rates has remained a significant challenge to building practical, large-scale systems.

Google’s approach uses coordinated measurements to detect errors and filter out faulty attempts, producing higher-quality states with fewer resources. On Willow, the method achieved a logical fidelity of 99.99% for T-states, a type of magic state used in quantum computing.

Researchers also demonstrated that cultivated states could be transferred between two quantum error-correction methods, marking progress toward integrating the technique into Google’s existing architecture.

The results provide an experimental demonstration of an approach developed theoretically in 2024. Google said further work is needed to scale the technique for practical quantum computing, but the findings offer a potential path to reducing the hardware resources required to build fault-tolerant quantum systems.
