Anthropic unveils cheaper, faster Claude Opus 5.5 model as AI race accelerates
Investing.com -- Anthropic (NASDAQ: ANTP) launched its newest flagship artificial intelligence model, Claude Opus 5.5, on Tuesday, introducing a faster and significantly more cost-effective tool aimed at enterprise workflows as the startup sharpens its competitive edge ahead of an expected initial public offering.
The launch represents Anthropic’s first major model release since Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei publicly advocated for pacing the development of frontier artificial intelligence to allow safety protocols to keep pace with raw capabilities. Positioned as the premier offering in a forthcoming Claude 5.5 family, Opus 5.5 is designed to match the benchmark performance of the company's elite Fable 5.1 model across most complex knowledge and software tasks while dramatically reducing the cost of deployment.
For enterprise clients, the primary appeal of the new architecture lies in its operational efficiency. Anthropic stated that Opus 5.5 costs 40% less to run on typical workloads than its predecessor, Opus 5, with input and output token pricing set at $4 and $20 per million, respectively. Additionally, cache reads, a critical cost component for multi-step coding and agentic tasks, have been cut by 60% to $0.20 per million tokens, while generation speeds have increased by more than 30%.
Early corporate feedback underscores the economic and practical advantages for large-scale enterprise deployments. Management consulting firm Deloitte reported that Opus 5.5 identified 72% of software bugs in testing at its lowest reasoning setting, outperforming Opus 5’s 56% detection rate at high effort while consuming a fraction of the output. Similarly, early trials by asset manager Walleye Capital and financial technology firm Ramp highlighted marked improvements in financial modeling accuracy and concise communication.
Beyond raw performance, Anthropic emphasized heightened security and alignment frameworks built into the new model. Opus 5.5 scored higher than any previous Claude model on the company's automated behavioral audits, exhibiting increased resistance to prompt injection attacks and a reduced likelihood of executing unintended, hard-to-reverse actions. To mitigate proliferation risks in sensitive domains, the company is deploying the model with built-in safeguards for cybersecurity and biology, requiring vetted organizations to clear verification programs for specialized research access.
The release comes at a critical juncture for San Francisco-based Anthropic, which is preparing for a highly anticipated Wall Street debut as soon as this fall, ahead of rival OpenAI’s projected timeline. By delivering a top-tier model that directly addresses corporate complaints regarding output verbosity and high API overhead, Anthropic is positioning itself to capture a larger share of enterprise software budgets.
The market rollout of the 5.5 product tier is set to expand rapidly in the near term. Anthropic confirmed that updated iterations of its mid-tier Sonnet and lightweight Haiku models will follow in the coming weeks, fully populating the Claude 5.5 ecosystem across major cloud distribution channels, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
