Investing.com - Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) launched an open source Model Context Protocol server on Tuesday that enables AI assistants to search and preview datasets on the Registry of Open Data on AWS.
The new MCP server connects AI tools including Kiro and Claude Code to more than 1,100 datasets from over 400 organizations hosted on the Registry of Open Data on AWS. The datasets span satellite imagery, life sciences, climate, and geospatial data from organizations including NASA, NOAA, NIH, and the Allen Institute.
The tool allows researchers to ask questions in natural language and receive relevant datasets, metadata, and data previews. Users can search for specific datasets, explore metadata and related resources, and preview Amazon S3 bucket structures and file contents before committing to deeper analysis.
The MCP server exposes three main capabilities: discovery through natural language searches, exploration of dataset metadata and similar resources, and evaluation through previews of file structures and content samples. The server can be added to MCP-compatible AI assistants using uv configuration commands.
The project is available under an Apache 2.0 license on GitHub.
