Amazon cuts jobs in artificial intelligence research group

Investing.com -- Amazon cut jobs in its artificial general intelligence group on Wednesday, continuing a pattern of smaller workforce reductions following a larger round of cuts in January.

The company eliminated positions within the division that focuses on developing AI systems designed to surpass human intelligence and operate autonomously. Major technology companies are pursuing similar research with the goal of creating systems capable of solving complex problems.

"We've been building large AI models for several years, and it remains one of the most important things we're working on," an Amazon spokesman told Reuters. "We're sharpening our focus on the initiatives that matter most for customers, so we can move faster on what counts. That focus means some difficult decisions, including eliminating some roles within parts of our AGI organization."

The company did not disclose the number of employees affected by Wednesday's cuts. Amazon eliminated 16,000 positions across the company in January.
