Amazon creates new AI organization under Peter DeSantis leadership

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) announced a new organizational structure that consolidates its artificial intelligence models, silicon development, and quantum computing under a single division led by Peter DeSantis, according to a statement from CEO Andy Jassy.

DeSantis, a 27-year Amazon veteran, will oversee the company's Nova AI models, the AGI team, silicon development including Graviton and Trainium chips, and quantum computing initiatives. He will report directly to Jassy.

The reorganization follows Amazon's launch of Nova 2 models at its re:Invent conference. DeSantis previously led AWS Infrastructure and Utility Computing services, which span 38 geographic regions and 120 Availability Zones globally.

As part of the restructuring, Pieter Abbeel will lead Amazon's frontier model research team within the AGI division. Abbeel co-founded Covariant, which developed commercial foundation models for robotics, and will continue working with Amazon's Robotics team.

The changes coincide with the departure of Rohit Prasad, who joined Amazon in 2013 and helped develop Alexa. Prasad led the creation of Amazon Nova and the AGI organization for the past two years, building twelve foundation models that are used by tens of thousands of companies. He will leave Amazon at the end of this year.

AWS leaders will retain their current responsibilities with additional duties to be announced by Matt Garman in a separate communication, according to the statement.
