Investing.com -- Alcoa Corporation has broken ground on a gallium production facility at its Wagerup alumina refinery in Western Australia, the company announced Monday. The project involves collaboration with government and industry entities from Australia, Japan and the United States.

The metal is primarily extracted as a byproduct during the conversion of bauxite into alumina rather than through direct mining operations.

The construction phase is projected to generate as many as 200 jobs, while ongoing operations will require approximately 20 permanent staff members after the facility becomes operational.
