Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS), Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), and others are on watch Thursday following the introduction of one of the lowest-cost, Android-based tablets on the market.
Wal-mart (NYSE: WMT) will begin selling the Hisense Sero 7 LT and Sero 7 PRO tablets on May 24th. CNET pointed out today that the LT will retail for $99 and the Pro at $149. The Pro has Android 4.2 with a 1.3-GHz NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA) Tegra 3 processor, 5-megapixel rear camera, 2-MP front-facing camera, mini HDMI, a micro USB slot, near-field communication (NFC) chip, Bluetooth 3.0-EDR, a 10-hour battery life, and 1-GB of RAM.
The LT will run Android 4.1 and have eased specs versus the Pro.
Both have 7-inch displays, hence '7' being in the name.
The news comes as many tablets are beginning to sport similar specs and consumers are becoming more price conscious. Google's Nexus 7 line, Amazon's Kindle Fire, and Barnes & Noble's NOOK are all Android-based tablets that have been vying for lowest-cost, highest-quality competitor. This new entrant, along with other offerings from ASUStek, Acer, and more, makes the competition a little more fierce.
Shares of Wal-mart are down 0.7 percent.
