Unfortunately, We Are Witnessing 2008 All Over Again

August 10, 2011 11:54 AM EDT
No you're not crazy, the volatility being witnessed in the market recently is unlike anything seen since late-2008, which was sparked by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers.

The Dow has seen 5 days of 400 point or more swings.

Here are the daily ranges on the Dow Jones the past five days:
August 4, 2011: 521.7987176
August 5, 2011: 416.4096807
August 8, 2001: 624.2361045
August 9, 2011: 639.9403954
Today - approximately 450 so far

Nothing this persistent has been witnessed since the fall of 2008, in the days following the Lehman Brothers failure.

Here are the daily ranges on the Dow Jones then:
Sept 15, 2008: 498.9410773
Sept 16, 2008: 350.5126204
Sept 17, 2008: 461.4065087
Sept 18, 2008: 616.9999158
Sept 19, 2008: 456.3584756

So for those saying this is "not 2008" all over again, the data suggests otherwise.

For investors who are waiting for the wild swings to end, you should be warned that the wilds swings continued though the first part of December that year before subsiding.
