UPDATE: Apple (AAPL) May Add NFC Technology to Upcoming Smartwatch

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) could add near-field communication technology to its expected smartwatch, hinting that the device could play a larger role in mobile payments.

The WSJ said using NFC would move Apple's smartwatch beyond typical applications for those sorts of devices, which include fitness trading and other health items. NFC could also enable devices, like smartphones and wireless speakers, to work together.

NFC is also expected to be incorporated into the upcoming iPhone, as previously reported.

The WSJ sees the smartwatch coming in two different sizes, with both featuring curved, OLED screens.

Apple shares are up 0.6 percent.
