Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) may still be looking to add new subscribers, but, as one tech blogger pointed out on Tuesday, the process to sign up isn't exactly smooth.
The Next Web highlighted how horrible the process is. For starters, no decent usernames appear to be left. Then, after selecting a few topics you're interested in, you are presented a list of popular celebrities or other media types that might be useful to follow.
The author even uploaded email contacts and wasn't really presented with a better slate of options for accounts to follow.
Twitter then tries to push more verified accounts on the new user for them to follow.
Overall, it appears that Twitter has a slew of data, but might not be utilizing it the best way it can at this point.
Imagine being someone new on the platform and wondering what it is you're supposed to do exactly. There probably little chance that a verified account will interact with a new user.
But, in a recent shareholder letter, Twitter said it was working to improve this process, which means suggestions of who to follow will be more relevant to the user. Until then, we suspect that most users joining the site for the first time without a specific reason might be put off enough to not log back on...at least, not for a while.
Shares of Twitter are up over 1 percent.
