The Popularity of Apple's (AAPL) iPad Could Be Getting... Smaller?

August 31, 2012 11:21 AM UTC
Amid speculation of a mini-iPad, new data from Bloomberg only is reinforcing the hype surrounding a smaller tablet.

According to reports out earlier Friday morning, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is tapping panel makers AU Optronics (NYSE: AUO) and LG Display (NYSE: LPL) to produce a smaller display panel for use in an upcoming product set for release in October. Chatter had Sharp potentially making panels for the new device, though its not expected to be an initial producer.

LG and AU Optronics will aim to make a panel measuring 7.85-inches diagonally, versus the currently 9.7-inch iPad screen size.

Last quarter, Apple shipped 17 million iPads and holds 70 percent of the global tablet market share. Despite the device being well received, competitors like Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN), and Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) have opted for a smaller tablet size, one more dedicated to media consumption rather than trying to mimic full PC function. Some have had success, but most haven't.

However, Google recently released its Nexus 7 tablet, Amazon is expected to refresh its Kindle Fire at a September 6th event, and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) will unleashes its Surface RT tablet in the fall, the three being main challenges Apple will have to surmount. Others include Asian OEMs Samsung, Acer, and ASUSTEK.

Apple will have its own event on September 12th, where it is largely expected to debut the newest iteration of its iPhone. Some speculation surrounds whether Apple will introduce an iPad Mini at the event, but two great items being unveiled at one event seems unlikely.

Shares of Apple are 0.7 percent into positive territory Friday morning.
